I am a Legal Counsel specializing in Maritime and International Commercial Law.
My practice involves dispute resolution arising from: charterparties and contracts of affreightment, bills of lading, bunker supply contracts, third party employment contracts (for example, stevedoring and terminal operations), international sale of goods contracts; marine insurance and general average matters; salvage; maritime ships’ operation in general.
I issue the reports and reviews to the management of the company in the fields of loss prevention and risk analyses based on information obtained in claims. I deal with various contractual disputes on a daily basis.
My international commercial practice embraces non-contentious tasks such as delivering specific and general advice appropriate to the business needs and drafting standard terms of contracts For example, recent work has included advising on the contract of affreightment for carriage of steel pipes and steel beams ex European continent.
In addition, I train and profess my colleagues within the company.
I similarly handle all types of P&I and FDD claims for the shipping company, which operates its fleet worldwide.
I am specifically involved in matters arising from: physical damage to and loss of cargo, including damage to general cargo, bulk cargo and loss of containers; damage to the ship’s hull and machinery, damage to the shore-based structures; breach of contract, esp in the context of time charters and voyage charters; demurrage disputes. However, the list of these matters is not complete.
I negotiate settlements of claims, inter alia, with cargo interests and disponent shipowners, seeking recourse against third parties if and when possible and necessary.
In close collaboration with our underwriters, I undertake a task of appointing and managing correspondents, surveyors and lawyers anywhere in the world. Similarly, have an extensive experience of handling the court and arbitration proceedings arising out in the UK and in other foreign jurisdictions.
My most recent work has involved casualty cases, such as shifting of cargo making the ship unseaworthy, collision, damage to hull, and wreck removal off Belgium territorial waters.
Taking into account my current PhD legal research at Swansea University, I have particular expertise in the area of the unification of certain rules of law for international carriage of goods by sea, and in the international regulations relating to transport documents (bills of lading).
The main topic of my research similarly implies a wide range of supplemental in-depth studies in branches of:
the law of contract; treaty interpretation; conflict of laws; the limitation and/or exclusion of the carrier’s and third parties’ liability in different jurisdictions, etc.
I undertake speaking engagements at the University and attend colloquiums at the Institute of International Shipping and Trade Law on frequent basis. I take full advantage of my access to extensive academic resources,
and make use of my contacts within the academic world.
Upon completion of my research, I consider the possibility to stay within the same University for part-time teaching.
I have a strong technical background: my 22 years’ experience in the shipping industry includes 13 years at sea serving on different types of vessels in different ranks.
